Why Duty Standby Wastewater Systems Are Essential for Commercial Kitchens and Critical Applications

In environments where wastewater management is critical—like busy commercial kitchens or buildings where disruption is not an option—a standard single pump system may not be enough. That’s where duty standby wastewater systems come into play.

What Is a Duty Standby System?

A duty standby system features two pumps rather than one. If the primary pump fails or becomes blocked, the standby pump automatically kicks in. This setup ensures continuous operation and peace of mind for facilities where even a short downtime could cause significant disruption.

Why Redundancy Matters

In settings such as commercial kitchens with multiple sinks and dishwashers or buildings with essential operations, the failure of a wastewater pump could bring everything to a halt. A duty standby configuration offers a vital layer of protection, preventing system failure and the associated operational headaches.

Two Designs, One Reliable Outcome

Pump Technology Ltd—one of the UK’s leading experts in wastewater and sewage pump systems—offers two distinct duty standby designs to accommodate different spatial and control needs:

  • DrainMajor Duo: A rectangular system housing each pump in its own compartment, connected via an overflow. Each pump operates independently from its own float switch.

  • DrainKing: A more compact square tank that houses both pumps together. It features a control panel that alternates which pump is in use, helping to balance wear and prolong pump life.

Both units can be fitted with high-performance Jung Pumpen wastewater pumps, including the 730/1030 HES models—renowned for their ability to handle continuous hot water pumping up to 90°C, a feature not always matched by other brands.

Innovative Float Technology

Jung Pumpen pumps come equipped with a large triangular low-level float, externally attached for precise and reliable pump activation. The updated DrainKing model now also uses this float design, eliminating the need for outdated trailing floats.

Installation Considerations

When installing a duty standby system, it’s crucial that incoming wastewater from sinks or dishwashers is plumbed into both pump compartments. This ensures that neither pump remains inactive for extended periods—preventing mechanical stagnation and wear issues.

  • The DrainMajor Duo is ideal when a simple and cost-effective solution is required, as it doesn’t need a control panel.

  • The DrainKing offers automated duty cycling, helping extend the lifespan of both pumps, with the added benefit of system status visibility through its control panel.

Alarm & Monitoring Integration

Both systems include high-level alarms with audible and visual alerts. They can also be connected to Building Management Systems (BMS) via volt-free contacts, or even to solenoid valves to automatically shut off water supply to appliances like dishwashers during a fault.
