Empowering the Next Generation: Pump Launches Innovative Learning Pod at Newbury College

Empowering the Next Generation: Pump Launches Innovative Learning Pod at Newbury CollegeAspiring engineer, Brayden Hall had a head start when he began studying Construction and Building Technology at Newbury College – a hands-on understanding of the latest in products and technologies in the water and waste management sector.

Growing up, Brayden had become a familiar figure at Pump Technology’s unit in Aldermaston, Berkshire. Trailing after his dad (Pump Technology Services Manager Daryl), and when he was older, helping in the warehouse, Brayden hadn’t realised how much he was absorbing, but staff teaching the Construction and Building Technology course at Newbury, were quick to notice his knowledge and skills.

Brayden has graduated from the course and is now a full-time employee.

In a forward-thinking initiative, Pump Technology are sponsoring a unique new ‘Pump Pod’ on campus at Monk’s Lane, Newbury, the intent is to provide the same opportunity to blend theoretical learning with real-time experience.

Daryl explains “we want all students to be able to experience the tangible link between workplace and learning. The 3×3 metre long pod will be equipped with a wraparound bench where they can assemble, disassemble and operate commercial-grade pumps. It will provide a chance to learn essential troubleshooting and maintenance skills”.

Currently, Newbury College fosters real-world experience through traditional mechanism including industry placements, work experience or guests invited to give expert talks. Having a functioning, working environment, equipped with the latest in water and sewage pumping technology onsite, will transform learning on the course. The Pump Pod offers them direct experience with real pumps and will also encourage teamwork and creative brainstorming.

Mike Mullen, Programme Leader for Construction and Building Technology at Newbury College, explains. “We want to equip students with a deep, practical feel for the trade; a ‘feel’ for how things work, and the opportunity to experiment with different tools, products and configurations. The relationship between industry and education has always been vital, but in the face of rapid technological advancement and the high demand for skilled tradesmen – practical experience is even more essential. To be able to partner with Pump Technology to establish a state-of-the-art learning pod for our students, is a significant precedent for industry-academic collaboration in the UK.”

Looking ahead, both Pump and Newbury College are committed to the project.

Daryl explains “It isn’t just about pumps and pipes – it’s about opening doors for the next generation, building talent and investing in the future prosperity of our community. We want more young people to pursue a trade in the pump and wastewater industry to ensure we can meet tomorrow’s challenges. Pump is proud to invest in the careers of the next generation.”
