Smiles & Swings, a local charity based in Thatcham who offer support for disabled children and their families, experienced a special day at Newbury Racecourse this summer, an event Pump Technology were delighted to help sponsor. Excited children and those who tirelessly care for them, enjoyed a private, fully accessible area with custom-designed facilities and personalised hosting. Catering for everything from private transport to dietary requirements, organisers ensured the smiles were as bright as the summer sunshine.
Pump Technology’s MD Jon Barker says, “Too often, those who most deserve, and need, a special day out, either can’t afford the cost or face practical barriers around accessibility. The Pump team are delighted to have been able to support Smiles & Swings as part of our ongoing commitment to give back to our community.”
In addition to complimentary tickets and a comprehensive racecard, attendees enjoyed two exclusive pony races and a live DJ performance at the ‘Pump Technology After Party.’ A private space complete with mobile sensory unit and a specially designed ‘AccessoLoo’ (bespoke units to ensure the toileting dignity of those with complex requirements), spoke to inclusivity and valuing difference. It was all in keeping with the Smiles & Swings vision – to ensure every child and their families, can enjoy the things that we, may take for granted.
Newbury Racecourse have named Swings & Smiles their official charity partner for 2025.
Connor Robinson, Partnership Manager expressed his pride in the event: “In August, we were proud to welcome over one hundred children and families from local charities Swings & Smiles and Home-Start to our Community Raceday at Newbury Racecourse. Hosted in the stretch tent area, the day offered a fun-filled and inclusive experience for families to enjoy the excitement of the races in a relaxed and welcoming environment. This initiative reflects our ongoing commitment—alongside our partners at Pump Technology—to champion meaningful community engagement. Supporting events like this is not only a privilege, but a responsibility we take seriously. It’s vital that we continue to create accessible, joyful experiences for families who may not otherwise be able to attend.”
